‘The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has customized its Predator drones, originally built for overseas military operations, to carry out at-home surveillance tasks that have civil libertarians worried: identifying civilians carrying guns and tracking their cell phones, government documents show.’
(Reuters) – The tide of war may be receding, as President Barack Obama is fond of saying, but U.S. military demand for unmanned drones and their remote pilots is growing.
The Obama administration has embraced the use of drones – the pilotless aircraft – as the most efficient means of targeting terrorists, without going to war in any country.
During the administration of President George W. Bush, 50 drone strikes were carried out. During President Obama’s first term in office, there were 400 drone strikes, making these remote-controlled assassinations a permanent part of national policy.
